French Country House Plan – How To Get It Right And How To Screw It Up

French Country is a popular home design style nowadays, both exterior and interior. This article addresses the French Country home design style on the exterior.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

Do you think that French Country, or the effected Country French, is a home design style? We’d say, “Not exactly.”

French Country is a range of home design styles -

1. From an early French farmhouse to not quite a French embassy

2. From residential design styles, including but not limited to Rustic French, Rural French, French Provincial, French Eclectic, Chateau (French version of the English Manor House), and the namesake French Country

3. From in-between Cajun style and Louisiana Plantation style

4. From the time period in America bracketed roughly by WWI and WWII

Comment: There is a stylistic kinship of sorts with other home home styles that are casually (and incorrectly) taken as singular and not as a set. For example, American Victorian is a/k/a (Victorian, in each instance) 2nd Empire, Gothic, Italianate, Queen Anne, Folk, Stick, Shingle, and Richardsonian (Romanesque). Or for example, Southern Colonial ranges from Warburton House (1680) in James City County, VA or Christ’s Cross (a/k/a Cris Cross) (circa 1690) in New Kent County, VA and simpler, all the way up to Bacon’s Castle (1650) in Surry County, VA and Stratford Hall (1725) in Stratford, VA [noting that other examples abound either standing, or artistically captured earlier-on or reproduced, the author having chosen these for their geographical and temporal proximity, Post-Medieval English roots, and breadth of character].

You’ll find beaucoups publications about French Country on Amazon.com and at your local bookstore. To wit, along with a slew of other design-oriented books, a while back we ordered Provencal Inspiration: Living The French Country Spirit by Home Planners, and immediately received a notice that Amazon’s out of stock. French Country is back bigtime. As another, more recent example, our just completed custom house plans in French Country Style for a property in Asheville, NC will be offered later this year at $4+ million [and the facades really do have a rural sense to them].

French Country style reminds us more than most of Craftsman style – multiple roof slopes; windows of different sizes and heights; broad overhangs and soffits; knee braces and other exposures of construction structure; front-facing gables; a mix of gable, clipped gable, shed, and hip roofs; natural materials; masonry exterior, especially stone; a mix of finish clads; restraint in exterior accessories and adornments. French Country style can be comfortable and inviting in its more relaxed presentations.

However, French Country home design departs from the Arts & Crafts Movement in several respects: high-peaked, steeply sloped roofs at pitches way above Craftsman’s; a refinement in exterior trim particularly in rakes; an understatement of observable structure; gutter systems sometimes with gussied-up copper appointments; curved rooflines to accommodate steep slopes, larger windows, unpierced ceilings and interior walls; broad soffits; arches and curve-topped dormers, elaborated ironwork; balconies; turrets; Classic columns; masonry accessories in relief, some interest in symmetry, etc. Simplicity and elegance.

There are ways to botch French Country home design, e.g., hold rooflines to one pitch to assure consistent soffit depth and single-level eaves – in the name of cheap, easy, and stylistically insensitive; apply Corinthian columns in lieu of, say, Tuscan, or flute the Tuscan columns; confuse French styling with English, unbalance vertical and horizontal to favor horizontal; not mullion grouped windows, not apply true French casement windows; use plastic shutters, S-dog the shutters, not apply true French doors, asphalt shingle the roof, insist on broad facia and frieze boards, etc.

And there are ways to develop French Country home plans by using – contemporary technologies, among them, e.g., cost-efficient cultured stone, particularly in its fieldstone representations – perhaps by Owens Corning; and by using artistry, e.g., the half-round copper gutter systems of A. B. Raingutters, Inc., Classic Gutter Systems, L.L.C., the gas or electric luminaires of Charleston Lighting Company or the aluminum wrought-like railing of Southeaster Architectural Metals, the garage doors of the Carriage House Door Company, and the like.

French Country style encourages applying design principles of excellent residential design, such as, Russell Versaci’s Creating a NEW OLD HOUSE: Yesterday’s Character For Today’s Home, The Taunton Press, 2003, and Jacobson, Silverstein, and Winslow’s Patterns of Home: The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design, The Taunton Press, orig. 1941, reprint 2002; and, separately, sacred geometry. Here again, you can embrace and succeed or disregard and fail in the design effort.

Take, for example, the layering and other arrangement of finish clad, notably in steeply sloped gable ends. In Versaci’s realm of signaled, or suggested, age, it is the wise designer who specifies supposedly older, heavier (looking) materials – fieldstone and the like – from grade up to, say, L1, and then some lighter material higher up. Such arrangement and layering would be particularly in-keeping with more steeply sloped roof gable ends which would most unlikely be originally run up 2 stories under high, hard to support roof pitches. That is, L2 should and would appear to be of more recent vintage than L1, and presenting a story of age without such attention to detail is to send the gift horse packing.

Finally, in the vernacular of Patterns of Home, again for example, the French Country style readily lends itself to creating a courtyard, or “Creating Rooms, Outside”, and to dormered space demonstrating design keystones of “Refuge and Outlook” under a “Sheltering Roof,” particularly if the rooflines are low-profiled and trimmed more simply on L2 than on L1.

French Country – A Classic Warm and Sunny Style

French country has got to be the grandmother of all of today’s Cottage style variations. Its sunny disposition, filled with rich colors and fun motifs speaks of hearty, robust people who love the land and delight in its bounty.

This style has the most potential to transport a room to another time and place. It’s casual, true, but it’s also sophisticated. While the look is especially fabulous for kitchens, French Country can put continental charm into any room of the house.

French Country colors feature bold, rich shades of red, blue, yellow, and green, often accented with black. Yellow sometimes serves as the pivotal color, paired alternately with blue or red.

These colors look terrific on French Country walls, which typically have a stucco finish. Interior walls can achieve a stucco look with the application of some plaster. There are also many faux wall treatments that will resemble the appearance of stucco. A faux finish would be a wise choice for those who’d like a less permanent wall treatment than stucco. It can change the appearance of texture without the fuss. This is a great option if you don’t want to change the texture of your wall, and desire a less permanent option. Craft, hardware and home improvement stores all carry faux wall treatment kits, books and other supplies.

Bricks are another wall texture found in this decor. While real brick walls can be expensive to add, faux painting styles again can come to the rescue. Brick wallpaper would be another option. Wallpaper in toile patterns also fits the decorating style.

Toile, along with chintz and calico, is the distinctive fabric for French Country decorating. Toile fabrics are prints that typically have a white or cream background and a repeated pattern of countryside scenes, usually in red, blue or black. Toile has a distinctly old-fashioned look.

The fabric that American most likely would call calico is known as Provincial fabric on the continent. They have small repeated patterns, unlike toile fabrics whose patterns are bigger. Provincials, or calicos, also have intense colors. These materials are carried in fabric stores and sewing centers.

French Country style is some popular, in fact, that there are varieties of pre-made textiles in everything from table linens to bedding and draperies. These patterned materials often are accented with accessories done up in stripes or checks. Such mixtures are a hallmark of Cottage Style.

Like many Cottage styles, the furniture typically is wood, either dark or natural, but also painted. The furniture sits on natural flooring of wood, stone or tile, sometimes decorated with stencils of flowers, vines or even roosters. These floors are covered with braided area rugs or kitchen rugs with farm animals or fruit on them.

French pottery, terracotta pots, copper pots, kettles and gelatin molds are all ideal accessories for this style. There are even china plates printed in toile style that make excellent wall hangings. Add a weather vane to the roof, and neighbors might think they’ve been transported to the countryside of Provence, thanks to your French Country decor.

Sarah is an expert contributing author happy sharing her ideas about French Country interior design. She just adores using seagrass rugs and sisal rugs on floors to bring a dash of panache to the room.

Tips For French Country Home Decor

French country home decor balances elegance with more rustic pieces. This is the perfect marriage of masculinity and femininity in decorating. You can spice up a kitchen, bathroom, living room or even a nursery with these tips for French Country home decor.

French country home decor looks expensive but that doesn’t mean that it has to be. You can just gather up the items in your home that fit the bill and group them together in new ways to make a big impact.

Find fun prints. Sure, florals are a staple of traditional design. French Country floral prints are really cheerful. The flowers in this style are more towards folk-art and the general feel is a lot more casual. You can mix these in with solids and checks for a cheerful way to decorate on a budget.

Decorate with the right color palette for your theme. As far as French country colors go it’s all about balance. If you want a modern color palette then go with black and cream color furniture then bring in bright red or yellow fabrics. If you want a true French country look then bring in a lot of yellow and blue accessories for a cheerful space. Red is also a color that is typically used in this design style. You might want to use it on your accessories instead of the walls. This will keep your room from being overwhelmed by a bold color.

Balance nature with elegance. Grandfather clocks are also a staple in this decorating style. Instead of the basic ornate Grandfather clock find a version that looks French. This might mean that it’s all black or even has ornate wood inlays. You’ll also want your house to have the sense that it’s been around for awhile. You could do this with a rustic faux rock wall or fireplace. You can also add log beams to the ceiling. Then you can juxtapose this against sleek stone types like marble or granite.

Use accessories that you love. There really is no right and wrong in decorating; even if you are using a theme. Ornate ceramic roosters are a staple in this design style but if you don’t like them; don’t use them. You could even just add color to your kitchen with a bowl full of cherries or lemons for a centerpiece that you can easily change out. If you have any antique ceramics, dishes or pots display them on shelves.

French country home decor will make your home feel lived in and lively. You can decorate on a budget by using color and pattern to make a big impact in your space.

Fish Chowder Recipe – An Easy French Soup

This is a great fish chowder recipe with a definite French influence. The broth is rich with cream, white wine, and just the right blend of herbs and spices. As for the fish, you can make it with cod or another fish, and the scallops are entirely optional.

Recipe Notes

One of the great things about fish chowder is that it makes wonderful use of frozen seafood. The soggy fish issue just does not come up if you are cooking it in a liquid. That means that this soup can be put together on the spur of the moment, making it a great quick dinner solution, even for weeknights.

If you are using frozen fish, you will need to defrost it slightly to be able to slice it. But do not worry about fully defrosting it before adding it to the chowder. It can defrost and cook in one easy step.

For quick cooking be sure to cut the vegetables in small pieces and do not be afraid to boil this fish chowder recipe before you add the fish. Once you have added the fish, it will cook quickly. You should remove the chowder from the heat as soon as the fish is done.

Fish Chowder Recipe – Soupe de poisson

  • 1 onion
  • 1 red pepper
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 potatoes
  • 4 tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • pinch of cayenne pepper powder
  • 1 tablespoon mixed dried herbs (such as thyme, basil, or oregano)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 pound whitefish filets (cod works well)

Begin by preparing all the vegetables. Peel and chop the onion. Wash, dry and chop the red pepper. Peel and dice the carrots in 1/4 inch cubes. Scrub and dice the potatoes in 1/2 inch cubes. Wash and chop the tomatoes.

Place a heavy soup pot or Dutch oven on medium heat. Add the olive oil and heat for one minute. Stir in the chopped onion, chopped red pepper, and diced carrots. Cook on medium heat, stirring occasionally, for five minutes.

Stir in the cayenne pepper, herbs, salt and pepper. Pour in the wine and add the tomatoes. Bring the chowder to a boil and add the potatoes. Cover the pot with a lid and cook the potatoes at a low boil for 10 minutes.

Remove the lid and add 1 cup water (a little more if you wish). Boil uncovered just until the potatoes are tender, about five minutes.

Meanwhile, slice the fish into bite sized pieces. Once the potatoes are cooked through, add the fish (and scallops if you are using them) to the pot. Cook for five minutes or just until the fish is cooked through.

Stir in the heavy cream and parsley and remove from heat. Serve immediately.

The French Wine Market

The market for French wine is very large, not only in France, but also in Europe and other parts of the world. French wine has been distinguished by its quality and its unique taste, which is why wine lovers from across the globe have exhibited a clear preference for French wine. Over the years, the market for French wine has grown in large numbers. Among the different types of French wine, Bordeaux wine has a large market by itself due to its status as the largest and oldest wine cultivating region in not just France, but in the world.

However, in the past few years, the market for French wine has been declining which had led to considerable losses for the industry. Many winemakers in France have joined hands and are working towards changing many of the age old rules and regulations that have literally crippled the wine industry. There is a huge support for the exemption of wine from the stringent advertising roles, which ban the promotion of alcohol on television. They feel that exemption from these laws will tap a huge market and increase local consumption as well as global consumption.

It has also been proposed that the wines be labeled according to what grapes are used in their making as opposed to the region of their origin. Producers feel that this will be useful to tap the French wine market in countries such as the USA, Australia and South Africa, among others.

French wine has a huge market and a fan following all over the world, but the stringent rules and regulations of the French government have handicapped the reach of French wine to many countries and sometimes, even to its own people. Hopefully, with the proposed changes, a new dawn shall usher in and the French wine market will witness a rising trend.

This will enable you to select which door is within your money boundary. You can search the internet for price comparison. This will give you at least an idea of how much the total cost will be before going to your home improvement store. In this case, you will not have to worry about exceeding more than what you have.

Learn French CD’s – Is Learning French on CD’s the Best Option?

Gone are the dry old text books (and the dry old teachers!) of yesteryear. Today there are a huge number of ways to learn and amongst the most popular are courses that let you learn French on CD. They’re certainly convenient, but are they the best way to learn?

There’s no doubt you have plenty of choice. A quick check of online stores will find several dozen different French language CDs running from children’s basic learning to moderately advanced and with prices from less than twenty dollars to those costing several hundred.

There is also a choice of approaches. You have audio-only CDs, which are great for in the home or car, and you have the more complex interactive kind which you need to use in your computer. In some cases it’s also possible to copy files to your MP3 player for truly portable, go-anywhere French lessons.

So with such a variety, how do you choose the best French CD for you? Is learning French on CD even the best option or are there better alternatives? Largely, of course, it depends on your personal preference, your current level of language skill and your budget.

If you’re just starting out there are a number of CDs that will give you an insight into the French language. Before you shell out your cash though, have a look around the internet. There are quite a few sites that offer free French lessons so check them out first. It’s true that they don’t offer much in the way of in-depth teaching (they are free, after all), but to be honest you’re probably not going to get a great deal out of a twenty dollar “beginning French” style CD either. At least you can check online before you decide.

If you’ve got a bit more to spend, the choice gets greater and the products get better. Michel Thomas’ French lessons on CD have been popular for quite a while. If you like these kind of “listen and repeat” type audio courses it’s hard to beat. I suppose it could be argued that they’re just a copy of the old tape systems, but that doesn’t mean they’re no good. It’s claimed that thousands of people have used them to learn French and I see no reason to argue. I’ve used them myself and they certainly give a good grounding in the basics of the language and can take you to what can reasonably be called a competent level of spoken French. Personally, I do find them a bit expensive when you compare them with some of the interactive systems that are a much more involving and, in my opinion, a more entertaining experience.

I suppose the disadvantage of the interactive French CDs is that you need to be at your PC to use them fully. I would still go for this type of product though because I think the positives outweigh the negatives. There are also some which deliver at least a portion of their French lessons in MP3 format so you can download these to a CD or your player and, once again, benefit from lessons on the move.

It’s the interactivity of these products that does it for me. French is not an easy language to learn but in my opinion having an experience that involves you, which makes you respond to sounds and pictures, is just more fun – and if you’re having fun then learning isn’t a chore. You’ll learn more and you’ll learn it faster. I can’t make a definite personal recommendation because I haven’t tried them all, it wouldn’t be fair, but I would choose this kind of “learn French” CD over the other options. They’re not cheap, but they’re a good choice.

However, before we finish there is one other option in this range that’s not strictly a CD but provides the same functionality and entertainment. Instead of delivery via CD it’s provided as easy-to-download files you copy straight from the internet to your home PC. It’s got the interactivity we’re looking for and the MP3 files and it’s very competitively priced. Furthermore it offers six free lessons so you can try before you buy. Definitely worth a look.

Setting the Atmosphere For the French Country Bathroom

French country bathrooms are about beauty, light, and most importantly, relaxation. The atmosphere in a French country home, and by extension, in the French country bath, is not dominated by practical concerns. While many of today’s bathrooms feature wall to wall tile, with shiny chrome fixtures and a antiseptic appearance, the style of French traditions includes more natural surfaces such as those seen throughout the rest of the home.

Floor coverings are one of the first considerations in the bath. These may be wood, or natural stone, travertine, or terra-cotta tile. One must take into consideration that if a surface is likely to become weathered in a bath or kitchen area, it is not considered a disadvantage in this decorating genre. Certainly, care should be taken to avoid water damage to the structure of your home, and safety should be a concern as well, but when things become worn or faded, they add to, not detract from, their usefulness in French country decor.

Just as important is color. The dominant color in French Country baths is white or some variation or shade of white. Soft fabrics, especially muslin and linens, are favored for their simple appeal. Colors are normally kept in the pastel range, allowing natural light to filter through the room easily. Some dark woods are occasionally used as accents or baseboards, or wood may be painted with a whitewash or milk paint effect.

Window treatments are usually kept to a minimum, since natural light is so highly sought after in the bath. Sheer panels may be used, or, if curtains are employed, they always include tiebacks or wall hooks so that they can be pulled aside to reveal the light streaming through the windows. Shower curtains are always made of cloth material, though a waterproof liner may be used if completely hidden from view.

Accents can be used throughout the bath to round out the look. Glass apothecary jars filled with bath salts or oils, dried or fresh vases of lavender, wrought iron accents, and vintage towel racks can all be used to create a bathroom that evokes comfort and can become a place of escape after a long day. Mirrors have a two fold advantage: first, the mirror itself, usually framed with painted or distressed wood is itself a traditional French country accent; second, mirrors are very useful in creating the illusion of more space, more light, and reflecting the beauty of the room you have created.

Lighting is another important consideration. Chandeliers or candelabras dressed with crystals or simple bronze or iron wall sconces can be used. The most important thing is to avoid the use of florescent light or bright and harsh electric bulbs. All man-made light sources should be filtered with shades or frosted glass to preserve the integrity of the natural light. Candles always have a place in French Country, perhaps nowhere more than in the bath, where it adds to the visual and sensual aspects of the room.

Today more than ever, a beautiful bath is needed for a retreat from the everyday stresses of life and work. Having a well-appointed and well thought-out bathroom design is a sure way to create such a retreat. Keeping in mind the key elements of color, natural materials, and light will ensure that you have a place to relax and enjoy for many years to come.

Learn to Speak French CDs – The Easiest Way to Learn French

Now I may be considered a bit of an oldie by some people’s standards – forty seven next birthday – but I can remember when the only ways to learn to speak French were lessons at school with dreadfully boring text books or boxes full of audio tapes that most people couldn’t afford. Now we have many new technologies to choose from and learn to speak French CDs are amongst the most popular for good reason.

You only have to browse through the products on offer at places like Amazon to find dozens and dozens of choices. Every aspect of learning to speak French is covered and every age range.

At their most basic there are the simple audio books – a CD you can put in your player at home or in your car. It’s much like the old tape systems in that you listen and repeat what’s said. Nothing wrong with that. Many, many people have learned perfectly adequate French using this kind of system. It’s not particularly fast and not particularly involving, but if you’re driving or doing something else where you can only listen it’s still quite effective. I quite often have a CD of this type on while I’m working on the computer. It may not have all my attention but the fact that it’s playing means I absorb at least some of it – even if that’s just getting used to the sound of French pronunciation. Every little helps and prices start from just a few dollars so everyone can afford them.

At the other end of the spectrum are the fully interactive French CD courses that you use in your computer. These have sound files that you can listen to, just like the more basic versions but they go far beyond that. Some have small movie clips based on real-life situations that you can watch and learn from. Some add interactivity to this – you have to choose the right answer from a selection. Some have interactive games and exercises to help you with the various aspects of French grammar. They also have written texts that you can print out and read. In a nutshell they cover all aspects of learning to speak French in a much more involving way often called “immersion” or “accelerated” learning.

There’s a price to pay for this sort of technology of course, the big well-known names like Rosetta Stone and Pimsleur will cost you hundreds of dollars to reach a good level of French. Whether that’s worth it is up to you. Certainly tens of thousands of copies of programs like these have been sold. Is it the easiest way to learn French? These systems are very good, no doubt about it, they will certainly help you learn French faster than any book ever did but before I say yes, this is the easiest way to learn French, there is one other type of course we should look at.

For the last couple of years there have been pure downloadable French courses. No CD or DVD just the software itself. This kind of delivery, like downloadable music and film, has been made possible (and practical) by faster internet connections.

The result is a couple of French courses that, because they are delivered digitally, offer the same sort of functionality as the CDs with all their advanced teaching methods and interactivity, but at about half the cost. As a result they’ve become very popular so before you buy your learn to speak French CD I would certainly look into these as an alternative.

How to Learn French in One Hour a Day – My Rocket French Review

I started learning French as a third language when I was 14. Ever since I started studying it, I fell in love with French. It’s just such a beautiful language and rolls off the tongue so nicely!

After I finished with school, I no longer had a tutor or classes to attend to be able to keep improving on- and learning french. I was of course not willing to give up learning it, so I had to find alternative ways. I knew that there were private tutors available who I could pay, but they were very expensive ($50 an hour) and if I was going to spend a few hours a week learning French, I would need to rob a bank to be able to afford that.

Another option was to move to a French-speaking country for a few months to learn the language, maybe get a French girl-friend too. However, this was not possible because I had my work, friends and family so I could not just leave the country.

I decided to buy a few French books and magazines and at the same time buy a learn french software program. I did some research online and found quite a few products for sale promising to offer fluent french within weeks. Some of these packages were close to $1000 which was a bit over my budget. My previous french teacher from high school recommended a product called Rocket French to me, and eventually this is what I ended up purchasing (for a very reasonable fee of $100).

I have been using it a few days a week for the last two years and I am really happy with my results and with that purchase. I know that many people will say that it is not possible to learn a language from home or from a computer software program, but I am telling you otherwise.

Whatever language it is that you have been wanting to learn since you were little, all you need to do it make the decision to do it. You need a software language program and you need one hour a day, that is all. Don’t sit around wishing that you could afford a tutor or that you could go and live in another country.

Taking action is the step that you need to make, today.

Hi, my name is Diggy and I personally use Rocket French software to get better at speaking French. I really recommend the product and if you want to know more, read my Rocket French review.

French Nails – Different Ways on Wearing It

Women, without a doubt, can be so vain about the way they look that is why they have a regular appointment at salons and spas. They make sure that every part of their body is well taken care of, even their nails. Some women frequently visit a hand spa just to ensure that they get their French nails maintained.

French manicure has been a favorite nail art for many women, which they wear on in any occasion. It has been a hit ever since because of the simplicity yet elegance it exudes. For some, it may already be passe. But then, a large number of women would still want to have French nails than any kind of design on them.

French manicure is a kind of art wherein the tip of the nail is painted with white nail polish. Since a lot of people still love this kind of nail design, different variations or ways of wearing it have emerged. At present, a wide variety of materials or nail coatings are being used such as air polish and nail acrylics or gel. Depending on the budget, you can choose which among these suits your taste. Also, instead of the traditional pink, beige, tan, or colorless base, there have been various base coatings used for this kind of nail art.

You can check online for the latest French manicure decorations or designs. There are French manicure tips with flower decorations and even cartoon character designs. With this kind of decoration, the salon tech normally applies the white nail polish on the nail’s crescent before doing the nail art decoration on top. There are also French manicure treatments where a glossy and glittery coating is applied to the nails after the white coating to give the nails a sparkling look. Some even add up rhinestones on the nails after the white coating is applied for an exquisite style.

Another variation of the French manicure is the application of silvery or glittery polish on the nail’s crescent instead of just a plain white polish. Some who are more experimental even use black or dark colored nail polish on the tips of their nails for a different look. No matter what French nail variation one chooses, she is sure that it can be worn for short or long nails.

How to Make French Toast

French toast is a very flexible recipe. There are hundreds of different variations and it can be:

  • Fried or baked
  • Prepared and served immediately, or prepared in advance and stored overnight
  • Depending on the ingredients (e.g. savory or sweet), it is suitable for breakfast, a main meal or dessert
This article provides an overview of the different recipes and describes how to make French toast. It also discusses the history of this recipe and interesting trivia. Although there are many different recipes, the basic steps and ingredients are:
  • Slices of bread (preferably slightly stale bread)
  • A mixture of egg and milk, in which the bread is soaked. Some of the richer recipes will use cream as well.
  • Sugar and/or spices. Depending on the recipe, these may be added during preparation or may be added after cooking. Maple syrup is a popular substitute for sugar, especially in Canada and the USA. Common spices include nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon.
  • Fry or bake the soaked bread, depending on the recipe.
The origin of French toast is uncertain but recipes dating back to the sixteenth century are documented. The recipe is European in origin, but not necessarily French as variations are found in many European countries but it is now unknown which country was originally the creator. In fact, given the basic and common nature of the ingredients, along with the simplicity of the preparation, it is very possible that it was independently developed in a number of different countries. Nor is the name a clue to its origin, as it goes by different names in different countries. In English-speaking countries, it is known as “French toast”, reputedly the name given to it during the hundred-years war by English soldiers serving in France, who frequently had little else to eat (although this explanation is not definitively proven). Prior to the hundred-years war, it was known in England as “Poor Knight’s Pudding” or “Poor Knight’s of Windsor”, perhaps because it would have been a basic but affordable dish for a Knight with little money. In other countries, this recipe goes by different names. In France, it was called “pain perdu” (lost bread), as it was a way of using bread that had gone stale and would otherwise perhaps be thrown away (in other words, lost bread). A similar pattern is to be found in Finland, where the basic recipe was called “köyhät ritarit” (poor knight’s) but if sugar and jam were added (relatively expensive ingredients at the time) it was called “rikkaat ritarit” (rich knight’s).

In America there were a number of names for the recipe, but it was perhaps most commonly known as “German Toast” prior to World War I. However, anti-German sentiment at that time resulted in it being renamed to “French Toast”. Since 2003 the anti-French sentiment in parts of the USA resulting from opposing positions over the Iraq war has resulted in it being renamed to “Freedom Toast” in the White House, US Congress and some restaurants. At about the same time these institutions also renamed “French Fries” to “Freedom Fries”.

Several different recipes and further information on French toast is provided at How to Make French Toast. Following is a typical recipe:

Ingredients (for 4 people):

  • 12 slices of bread (thick cut). Slightly stale bread is better as it will absorb the batter mixture better. If you don’t have stale bread, you can leave sliced fresh bread out for a while to allow it to dry a bit.
  • 6 eggs
  • 3/4 cup of milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preparation
  • Beat the eggs
  • Add the milk, vanilla and cinnamon. Mix with the beaten eggs.
  • Soak the bread slices in the mixture.
  • Fry the soaked bread on one side until golden brown, then turn and fry until the other side is golden brown. Either use a non-stick pan, or add butter to an ordinary fry pan, to avoid the French toast sticking to the pan.
  • Serve. Depending on individual tastes, one can sprinkle sugar or add maple syrup on top.
One can easily change the above recipe by using different spices (e.g. nutmeg) during preparation or providing different toppings (e.g. jam) which the diners can add. It can be made richer by using some cream, or more suited for a main meal by providing non-sweet toppings. Finally, there are a number of versions of this recipe which are based on baking rather than frying. Click on the link above for examples.
